Angelica's Story

Angelica has always been an incredibly determined student. Despite her long work hours and complicated personal life circumstances, she always came to class prepared to learn. During breaks, she was always the first one to come back to the classroom to restart the session. Throughout the semester, she only missed one class – and she missed it because it was the day of her interview.

Angelica’s determination stems from her goal-oriented character. When I asked her why she wanted a new job, she did not hesitate for even one second to tell me that she wanted to live independently and provide for her 8-year-old son. Angelica was so determined to get a job that she would crisscross San Diego County in a single day by first going to her FedEx night shift in La Jolla, then going home to Spring Valley to pick up her son, dropping him off at school in San Ysidro, and then finally attending class in Kearny Mesa. If that is not resilience and determination, I don’t know what is.

Angelica attended her first interview without a job coach and landed a porter position at Viejas Casino. Angelica’s short-term goal is to grow within the company by being cross trained in other departments. Angelica is an exemplary student with a heart of gold. Even though her first 27 years of life may not have been easy, she is determined to create her own positive future.
